Here is a summary of our discussion, after Prof. Ram did not reject the new concept of Universal Source Code, which is similar, according to Prof. Ram, to the Universal Assembly (UNCOL) in intention, but covers all the source code languages. UNCOL is UNiversal Computer Oriented Language, a universal intermediate language, discussed but never implemented. This concept is not particularly new or original. It has been discussed by many independent persons as long ago as 1954. It might not be difficult to prove that this was well-known to Babbage, so no effort has been made to give credit to the originator, if indeed there was a unique originator.
Quoted from Philip R. Bagley in 'The Computer Journal' Vol. 4 1961"Hypothesised several years ago, UNCOL (Universal Computer-Orientated Language) has as its basic premise that programs expressed in a problem-orientated language (such as ALGOL) can be translated first into UNCOL and thence into machine code. This translation would involve keeping invariant certain aspects of a program while it adapts those aspects which depend on the machine chosen to execute the program." A portable C language, C--, is a portable Assembly language. UNCOL. '''UNCOL''', UNiversal Computer Oriented Language, was a proposed universal intermediate language for compilers. It was never implemented. UNCOL would have supported a back-end for every machine architecture. A compiler for a new programming language would only have to compile to UNCOL. UNCOL is sometimes used as a generic term for the idea of a universal intermediate language. Architecture Neutral Distribution Format is an example of an UNCOL in this sense. UNCOL from FOLDOC is one of the never-attained "Holy Grails" of computing, the hoped-for "UNiversal Computer Oriented Language," a sort of universal assembly language that should be a good intermediary to allow running any computer language on any kind of computer hardware.
The term Universal Source Code is frequently used in information theory involving entropy and probability. The term Universal Code often refers to a universal human languages based on sound, touch, logic, etc. The term u code or u-code is generally referred to the universal Pascal intermediate language.
Therefore, the non-conflicting term for the new SSS concept of universal source code should probably be Universal Computer Source Code, which is also a (source code like) explanation of the new concept. The purpose of the universal code is to ultimately easily translate human intentions into machine language which is represented by integers. Since the Universal Computer Source Code (UCSC, school which is the inventor of p-code !) is always in integers, the translation to machine language can be completely automated.
The specifications (SSS source code) for the OLD.BAS is 3, 7, 1, Amy announces UCSC., and that for the NEW.BAS, which is written using NEW.BAS, is 1, 1, 1, Amy announces UCSC, for constructing a computer program to print out on screen the statement "Amy announces UCSC." (10 PRINT "Amy announces UCSC."). With the Auto-update program, the specifications for OLD.BAS can be automatically updated to that for NEW.BAS. The construction of the Auto-update program (enclosed) takes up most of the time in the SSS Demo Tape (available) and is without any human judgment, and, thus, conceptually is completely automatic mainly because the Universal Computer Source Code, namely, 111 to 999 contained in ugs (Update Generating Set) in the SSS Demo.
OLD.BAS is alphabetically arranged and, thus, does not miss any BASIC statement and can do anything the BASIC language can do. When OLD.BAS can self-generate, it can then modify itself at will. With the availability of Self-generating BASIC System, the BASIC language is no longer necessary and is permanently replaced by SBS, which can be modified, in particular, into any human language, eliminating the human language barrier, in particular, the English language.
To completely eliminate the technical barrier in human-machine communication, SSS employs the additional innovations of the Universal User Interface and the Universal Data File. UUI depends on the human associative memory to access an unlimited amount of information. UDF, in which the Address of a record in the file is contained in the record and is accessible by setting a flag before moving down the UUI, is necessary to achieve self-generation, as explained in SSS patent. All the technical barriers, which are scattered all over the computing system, have been transferred in SSS into these Addresses, which are remembered through the human associative memory in UUI of SSS. These Addresses are the Permanent Integer ID Numbers and should be today (2005) one of the most valuable intellectual properties, without much hassle.
SSS was developed for the BASIC language in just a couple of months. Each computer language can be replaced by SSS with just one or two Ph. D. theses in USA, China, or India. Initially, SSS developed by student will just be an academic contribution, but eventually SSS will become popularly used because SSS can produce exactly the same results as the existing source code languages. Most importantly, SSS, regardless of its complexity, has achieved the (only?) discipline (of its own) in computer science, namely, that of complete automation or the condition of permanence.
I am so glad, in fact, laughing in my sleep, that after many turbulent turns of events, I end up introducing and inventing the term "Universal Computer Source Code" (which has no match in Google Exact Search) with the indispensable help from you and Prof. Ram.

Dear Prof. Ram,
Dr. Chee, Rudy, Toy Dancing Doll, and I have tentatively planned to meet on Sunday (May 29) at Ming's Villa in Palo Alto (I can still remember how to get there because I rescued the Restaurant from bankruptcy many years ago). Rudy will decide the time of the meeting. If you can join us, I can drive to Danville to pick you up. Anyway, we will reserve a chair for your in case you decide to drop in. I really appreciate that you introduced Dr. Chee to us and you offered your valuable comments to Toy Dancing Doll, who is still excited with her newly-found name "Universal Computer Source Code" for one of the three SSS innovations. She did some further research on UNCOL on the web and wrote an email to me with copies to you, Dr. Chee and our other friends. I believe that you have help her greatly in referring UNCOL to her during our last Saturday lunch meeting.
One thing I disagree with UNCOL from her email to me is that it is the "Holy Grails" of computing. The goal of UNCOL is only one-third of SSS (Self-generating Software System), which, aside from the innovation of Universal Computer Source Code, has the two additional innovations of the Universal User Interface (employing the human associative memory to access an unlimited amount of information) and the Universal Data File, which has the record to be accessed containing the address of the record (thereby all the technical barriers contained in the addresses are eliminated with the help of the Universal User Interface).
The new term "Universal Computer Source Code" with no Exact Match on the web should made the starting point in introducing SSS because it correspond to the current computer science based mainly on source code. UCSC (Universal Computing Source Code) is elegant because it can be simply described by examples, such as 1111 to 9999, 111 to 444 for DNA, 00 to FF for machine code, etc., while examples for UNCOL are not given right away. UCSC shows that the problem or "Holy Grails" of computing has not been fully defined by UNCOL, for UCSC needs UUI (Universal User Interface) and UDF (Universal Data File) to achieve complete automation for software. The finite, integer, predictive (known in advance) UCSC should be a direct challenge to the current computer science based on the infinite, arbitrary, random, unpredictable, English-based source codes. After she named the SSS innovation of UCSC, I further described to her that in the three main features of SSS, Self-generation requires the innovations of UUI and UDF, and Auto-Update and Auto-documentation employ the innovation of UCSC.
I am starting to communicate with Dr. Kunii in preparation for a possible meeting with him in July or August. I would like to look into his progress in graphic theory based on homotopy. I strongly believe that his view is on the right track for computer graphics. What it needs is a sufficiently large infrastructure. Dr. Kunii has tried using Russian mathematicians. Maybe China or India can provide some long-term support for the idea, which is surely to take over today's triangulation, whose resolution can be extended only with prohibitive cost.
Also, Dr. Kunii and Richard Stallman, who is associated with Post-Science Institute and sometimes live in our dormitory in Berkeley, are both initiators of Open Source Movement. From the point of view of SSS, they are lucky to hit on the right idea, because SSS is most suitable to a computing environment where the software is not just Open but also free (It would be difficult to Auto-update a Closed software, and to assign fees partitions to self-generated, but modified, software.). Therefore, SSS and Open Source work well together. As I explained to Toy Dancing Doll, Open Source provides just the Economic Freedom to software usage, but SSS will provide Technical Freedom because SSS has managed to eliminate ALL the technical barriers to computer usage, in addition to satisfying the only discipline, and a most difficult one for knowledge, of complete automation or the condition of permanence. When the proper situation arises, such as a major Chinese or Indian effort to develop SSS, I shall release my SSS patent into the public domain. On the other hand, I have written a patent application for Permanent Numbers based on SSS and shall try to obtained the world-wide copyright to Permanent Numbers (integers from minus infinity to plus infinity), which should be the easiest and most valuable intellectual property and immediately applicable in search engines.
While I am communicating with Dr. Kunii, I probably should add that Dr. Kunii should be considered the leader in Descriptive Knowledge, while Post-Science leads in Structural Knowledge, as Hardware Design includes Descriptive and Structural Languages. The East culture is more perceptive and the West, more analytic. It is only nature for the East to contribute human descriptive knowledge and the West, structural knowledge. Both are necessary in the progress of human civilization. You will be the leader in melting the two knowledge into one.
Please let me know any suggestion you have for Dr. Kunii (and your comments for me). I shall contact Dr. Chee and Rudy this week. Thank you for your guidance. With best regards, Hugh
